County Durham is situated in the north east of England, between Tyne and Wear and Teesside. It is similar to many other counties in that it is names after it’s county town – Durham – yet is unique in that it is called County Durham and not Durhamshire.

County Durham has a strong coal mining industry, with many of the coal mines extending out under the North Sea. As with other areas of the country this industry has all but closed. The county has a rugged coastline, moors and is bordered by The Pennines, making it a popular area for nature lovers and walkers.
